Hi Teresa,
I was so pleased to find you over the weekend. I have some questions for you, which if you have some time to reply that would be of a great help to me.
I live in PA, and I’ve been doing Ukrainian eggs for three years. It has been so pleasing to watch my talents grow, and my creativity bloom as I have allowed myself the time to enjoy and develop my skills. I bought the *basic* basic set of dyes, wax and one medium kistka. Now that I’ve established that this is going to be a life-time hobby, I think it’s time to get more supplies, but I don’t want to go over-board. Getting a fine kistka is pretty much a given, I can feel and see my limitations with only having a medium. Is there a particular brand that you use? What’s your thoughts about electric kistka? For me, half the pleasure is getting to sit in front of a candle…I find that very soothing…but perhaps there is less of a chance of wax drips and blobs with the electric one? (I suppose I could just burn the candle on the side for the ambiance!)
Dye questions: I’ve only bought dye once, and it’s ready to be trashed and replaced with new (!). Last time I bought from: http://www.ukrainianegg.com/ and they were fine. Is there other dye that you have used that you would recommend?
Making straight lines question: So far I’ve had fairly good success drawing straight lines freehand, but now that I’ve been doing it longer I’m getting more picky with my work and would like to make my lines more perfectly. Do you use an egg lathe at all? What other tools do you use to help you make straight lines?
